Women in Power: Lived Realities in Family Enterprises
In March 2026, our partner Women in Family Business (WIFB) has launched a report “Women in Power: Lived Realities of Leadership in Family Enterprises”, offering fresh insights into the experiences and challenges faced by women stepping into leadership roles within family-owned businesses. The study draws on a global survey of 106 women and provides a nuanced examination of the barriers and opportunities in family business succession.
Key Findings Challenge Common Assumptions
The Women in Power report challenges a widely held assumption in family business circles: that women’s capability is the primary barrier to leadership transitions. Instead, the research reveals that women’s competence and commitment are rarely questioned. What often determines success or struggle is the clarity of their mandates, the actual transfer of authority, and the organizational readiness to integrate them into leadership roles.
The study identifies several recurring patterns in women’s leadership journeys within family enterprises. Many women experience informal entry into leadership positions, leading to ambiguity about their actual authority and responsibilities. Additionally, the research documents prolonged “proving periods” during which women must demonstrate their capabilities before gaining full organizational acceptance and decision-making power.
Practical Implications for Family Business Governance
The findings from the Women in Power report have direct implications for how family enterprises approach succession planning and leadership development. Rather than focusing on individual capability assessments, the report recommends that family businesses examine their systemic readiness, including governance structures, clarity of roles, and the formal transfer of authority, as critical factors in successful female leadership transitions.
The report emphasizes that creating environments where women can thrive requires intentional design and clear communication. Family enterprises that explicitly define leadership mandates, establish transparent authority structures, and prepare organizational systems for new leaders are more likely to achieve smooth transitions and retain female talent.
